Space ships cannot fly faster than the speed of light in a vacuum, as nothing can according to the current laws of physics! Light in free space is the fastest thing in existence, and the fact that it does not travel instantaneously is why when you look up at the stars you are looking backwards in time.

They can’t, or at least, our current understanding of physics dictates that they can’t.
